Here's the study and final painting for "Bath Time No. 2” by Sterling Hundley (@sterlinghundley)The study (the one without the blue) was created using the same technique I described before. I'll paste that below for anyone who didn't read how these are created. It's truly an astounding creative process. "Bath Time No. 2 (Study)" 20x16, collage with encaustic on panel "Bath Time No. 2" 36x24, oil on panel In the series "A Familiar Interval", now on view at Principle Gallery, Sterling Hundley mixes time-based representational drawing with abstraction to create captivating, abstract works. The study contains many layers of drawings from the same perspective in his Bathroom. He first puts down a layer of brown kraft tape on a panel and draws what he sees. He then covers the same panel with the tape once again, completely covering the old drawing. He'll do many more sittings and cover them up. After he's drawn the scene many times, he'll take an exacto knife and trim pieces off to reveal sections of previous drawings. At this point, it's a completely reductive process of peeling away layers. When he's happy with the composition, he'll seal it with encaustic. The collage study I just described was used as a reference to paint the final piece in oil (the one with blue). This body of work keeps you involved; it begs you to discover new parts and wants you to keep dissecting for morsels to sink your teeth into. Standing back and seeing this as an abstract work is as satisfying as pulling it apart up-close. Sterling's knowledge of the basic tenets of art allow him to create abstract works successfully, even though he's spent most of his career as a very successful illustrator, making representational works.
